Becoming An Outlier—Living A Life Of The Fantastic

A leader once said, “If you show me the five closest friends you spend the most of your time with, I’ll bet your income is close to the average of those five. I’ll bet your status is the average of those five, I’ll bet your career is about average of those five and I’ll even bet your marriage or relationship is the average of those five.”

No matter how nasty we may think that is, it has a ring of truth or truism to it. One transformational company even markets a course for several thousand dollars that operates on the assumption that “who you are is given by the networks of conversations you are in.”

Now none of that is absolutely true, yet it is valid. Let’s first talk about why it is not absolutely true.

Use example of Bill Gates. If you took the five next wealthiest people in the world as his best buds, their average would have him take a 50% pay cut. Bill Gates is what we call an outlier.

HOW DO YOU PRODUCE RESULTS THAT MAKE YOU AN OUTLIER? THAT DEFIES THE AVERAGE? THAT MAKES YOU THAT DESIRABLE 5^TH FRIEND PEOPLE WANT IN THEIR CIRCLE TO BUMP UP THEIR AVERAGE?
